More than 180 participants from 15 Universities took their racquets to Boston Badminton in Westborough MA on Feb 1-2 to slug it and determine the winners of the 2014 YONEX Northeast Collegiate Team Championship. The 2014 Crown goes to the Drexel University Team with a little help from a friend and guest player, Kenneth Bohr of University of Maryland.
This year's Connecticut Open, our 55th annual, featured several new champions. Alan Shekhtman from Massachusetts captured his first Men's Singles and Mixed Doubles titles.
Charmaine Reid from Canada, a triple crown winner, took her first Women's Singles title and teamed with six time Women's Doubles winner, Daphne Chang, to top the Women's Doubles field and paired with Alan Shekhtman to take the Mixed Doubles.
With the fast growth and popularity of badminton clubs in the region, university students are now stepping up their game and desiring for a match up with other universities. This is evident in the participation of 16 collegiate teams from 7 states in the upcoming Northeast Collegiate Team Championships to be held in Boston Badminton, Westborough on Feb 1-2.
