Casual Backyard Players Wowed by Valley Forge Competition
Maybe it was the presence of international competitor Vincent Lobo, or the novelty of a tournament at church—okay it was in the gym, but still. The speed and fitness required for tournament play surprised many of the Valley Forge Baptist Church onlookers according to Event Coordinator, Hari Avadhanam.
Lobo, once ranked 20th in the world and winner of multiple international titles, captured a win in the A Open Men's Doubles with partner Archie Paul, a former USA Badminton board member and current board member of PBA.
Thirty one players ranging in age from 15 to 60 participated, including many newcomers with some first-time participants from the Lehigh Valley area. Of the facility, Avadhanam said it was comfortable; no doubt the air-conditioning was a break from the excessive heat that defined the start of this summer. He found it especially exciting to have many members of the VF Baptist Church exposed to top-drawer play.
