Olympic Games Spur Local Interest in Badminton

WBAL-TV, the Baltimore affiliate of NBC, is coming to the Northeast Regional Recreation Center in Parkville, MD on Saturday August 4 to videotape a special feature on badminton. The series will air on one of the morning newscasts during the Olympics. It will also be showcased during one of their Ozone shows, which is a nightly show dedicated to the Olympics.

High Flying Expectations for Chern

Lee Chern, a 17-year-old junior at Wayland High School, in the outskirts of Boston, has been playing badminton for more than half of his life.
Chern’s unusual introduction into the sport of badminton came, of all places, at a bowling party he attended.  The bowling alley, it turned out, had badminton courts upstairs.  His sister began playing, and he followed to begin training.  He was six or seven years old at the time, and has been playing ever since.

Our Region's prodigious corps of Technical Officials continues to grow!  Congratulations to Alex Dedov (NJ), Henry Huang (NJ), Newman Shee (MA) and Peter Smith (NH) on recently completing all the requirements for Regional Umpire.  All were important members of the strong team of officials assembled for the 2012 USAB Junior Interntional Team Trials at Boston Badminton Club in April.  They are all to be congratulated for their performances and we look forward to working with them in future events.
