The 2008 Rochester Open Badminton Tournament, held October 25th and
26th at the University of Rochester (Rochester, NY), drew its largest
crowd in the tournament’s five year history, with nearly 120 participants.
Badminton players from across the Northeast United States, including
Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New Hampshire, New York City and Upstate New York,
competed in the game-packed two day tournament for bragging rights and one of 42
trophies that were awarded to winners and finalists in every event. 271
matches, many of which included games past 21 points, were played on six courts
over the course of 20 hours. The exciting Men’s doubles final came closest to
the “drop dead” score of 30 with a final first match score of 29-27. A number
of local high school and college students also participated in the ABC drop
tournament, a sign of the growing popularity of the sport in the Rochester
region.
The Rochester Open Badminton Tournament is hosted by the University of Rochester
and the University of Rochester Badminton Club. Tournament directors included
Claus Weyand, Jonie Dye, Brett Young, Shaw-Ree Chen and Darlene Squires.
