Corona, not the beer, nor the crown, but the virus commonly known as COVID-19 or the Novel Coronavirus has paralyzed the whole world. What does this mean for professional and recreational badminton players alike? When the stay-at-home order was enforced, non-essential businesses were shut down, and this includes your favorite badminton gym.
To “flatten the curve” which simply means, to slow down the spread of infection. The “curve” refers to the projected number of people who will contract the COVID-19 over a period of time. This is a theoretical number.
So with this in mind, what are we supposed to do? Aside from jogging back and forth from the couch to the fridge, how do we maintain our physical fitness and be able to bounce back?
Don’t despair! Now, there are a lot of videos on youtube.com just search for badminton drills at home and you will be able to choose from hundreds of drills, exercises for agility, strengthening and power. Practice your double jumps and establish goals and surpassing them. Fulfill your neighbors expectations by seeing you play “backyard badminton” and dazzle them with your fancy footwork and jump smashes. Just be careful if playing on grass or uneven ground, don’t want to derail the badminton career by getting injured. Keep moving and keep active!
Badminton is a social sport, and that is why we LOVE it! Don’t forget to check on your team mates, your coaches and your badminton group. You can chat and dream about the day they re-open the gym and whack birdies again.
Lastly, don’t lose hope, use this time to spend time with the family, catch up on sleep, there is light at the end of the tunnel. There is a lot of information out there, AND misinformation too. Make sure you get your news from reliable sources.
