Donald C. Paup Coaching Fund
The Northeast Badminton Association announces the initiation of a fund to honor Donald C. Paup, a champion player and renowned coach who spent most of his career in the Washington, DC and Virgina area. The fund will be used to support the education, development, and certification of coaches resident in the Northeast, which includes the 13 states from Virginia to Maine, including the District of Columbia. Donations to the fund would help defray the cost of conducting coaching clinics and otherwise support the development of coaching resources in the Northeast Badminton Association, which is a 501(c) (3) tax exempt entity, and the regional arm of USA Badminton.

Don Paup had an extensive coaching career, including serving as coach of the U.S. International Teams from 1971 to 1974, coach at the Olympic Festival, coach of The George Washington University (GWU) women’s badminton team, and coach at many badminton camps, including the Connecticut Badminton Camp (1974-1983) in Farmington, CT, and the GWU Badminton Camp (1988-1999) in Washington, DC. Don also authored two badminton skills books and teaching films.

As a player, Don’s badminton achievements spanned from the late 1960s through 2002. He won 18 national titles – nine U.S. National Men’s Doubles, one U.S. National Mixed Doubles, and eight Senior National Doubles Championships. He also won the Mexican and South African Open Men’s Doubles championships. Internationally, he played on, captained, or coached the U.S. Thomas Cup Teams from 1964 to 1979, U.S. Devlin Cup Teams, and the U.S. Touring Team to South Africa. Don was inducted into the Badminton Hall of Fame in 1973, and years later, the Walk of Fame; received the Ken Davidson Sportsmanship Award in 1976; and served on the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports (1968-1997).

As impressive as Don’s career highlights are, he is most remembered in the badminton community by the many players and students who he coached, ranging from the very top echelon of U.S. players, to beginners. He was always ready to help and play with new and learning players, and encouraged and coached many of them to become accomplished badminton athletes. At the same time, his badminton analytical skills were legendary, and the best players in the country relied on his coaching and physical training insights to improve their competitive skills. Don was an inspiration as a coach and a champion to countless badminton players, and it is only fitting that his contribution to the sport of badminton be honored though a fund focused on supporting the education, development, and certification of coaches, to continue his legacy.

Criteria for Awards & Application Procedures for the Donald C. Paup Coaching Fund Criteria for Awards
The Donald C. Paup Coaching Fund (“Paup Fund”) has been set up to support the education, development, and certification of coaches resident in the Northeast, which includes the 13 states from Virginia to Maine, including the District of Columbia. Awards can be made to support coaching activities (e.g., to the host club to defray the costs of a coaching clinic), or to individuals (e.g., to defray certification costs).
In order for a coaching activity to receive support, it must be an activity approved in advance by the Northeast Badminton Association (NEBA) Paup Fund Committee as eligible for support. Appropriate activities include coaching clinics, coaching certification activities and other coaching education efforts. The impact of the activity in terms of coaches and/or players who will benefit from the funding will be considered in determining awards.

In order for an individual to receive support, an application will be evaluated taking into account the following criteria:
• Commitment to coaching badminton
• Projected benefit of the award in terms of coaching impact on the badminton community
• Expertise as a badminton player and/or coach
• Exemplary sportsmanship attitude – should be a positive role model
• Participation in an eligible coaching activity
• Financial need
• Permanent resident of the Northeast Region

Application Process
Applications for funding should be submitted by the organizer of a coaching activity or by individual coaches to the Fund Chairperson and should include:
• Event or activity for which funding request is made, including details of the activity (location, timing, etc)
• Funding level requested, and intended use for funds
• Demonstration of need for funding (e.g., costs associated with the event, financial need for assistance, etc)
• For individuals, personal background relevant to coaching, including coaching experience and current coaching activities (including an explanation of who has been and will be coached by the applicant), and coaching goals
• For individuals, supporting statements by clubs, coaches, parents or players would be welcome, as well as any indications of recognition of the coach (e.g. awards)

The Committee will consist of at least two persons from the NEBA badminton community who will be named by the Board of NEBA. The committee can choose to increase the number of committee members and may nominate individuals to serve with the approval of the NEBA Board. The Committee will select its Chairperson from its members.
