Remember Northeast players Sameera Gunatileka and Vincent Nguy from Maryland? During 2008 to 2011, they trained hard and performed well to earn their slots in Team USA for various BWF events including the Pan Am Championships (team and individual event), Thomas Cup and World Championship.
There must be a tree somewhere inscribed with a carving that says, “Beth Loves Badminton.”
And that would be a great way to mark Beth Sopka’s love for the sport. But at this year’s Masters Nationals, the board took that notion up a notch, announcing that she is this year’s winner of the Ray Scott Award.
Getting badminton to be a true sport in high schools once seemed impossible, but … perhaps not! This past Sunday, March 2, 11 teams from 14 Massachusetts schools, 147 students in all, gathered at Boston Badminton Club (BosBad) in Westborough, MA, to compete for the 2014 Massachusetts High School Team Championship and the enthusiasm, sportsmanship and overall skill seen there was truly inspiring.
